(Hati) How Now Shall We Give? by Chuck Holton

In early 1773, the men of Marlborough, Massachusetts declared unanimously:

“Death is more eligible then slavery.  A free-born people are not required by the religion of Jesus Christ to submit to tyranny, but may make use of such power as God has Given them to recover and support their laws and liberties… We implore the Ruler above the skies, that He would make bare and His arm in defense of His Church and people, and let Israel go.”

New Guide to the English Tounge by Thomas Dilworth, gained universal adoption in the New England schools by 1765.  This book contained spelling, reading and grammar lessons, “adorned with proper Scriptures.” Its first lesson, having words only three letters long or less, stated:

William Holmes McGuffey (1800-1873), Considered the “Schoolmaster of the Nation,” McGuffey published the first edition of his McGuffey’s Reader in 1836.  The book was the mainstay in public education in America till 1920. As of 1963, 125 million copies had been sold, making it one of the most widely used and influential text books of all times.  In it’s foreword, McGuffey wrote:

“The Christian Religion is the religion of our country.  From it are derived our prevalent notions of the character of God, the great moral governor of the universe.  On its doctrines are founded the peculiarities of our fee institutions.

The Ten Commandments and the teachings of Jesus are not only basic but plenary.”
