John Newton (1725-1807), was the captain of a slave trading ship who became converted and wrote the famous spiritual song Amazing Grace. He was so depraved in his former profession that even his crew became disgusted. Once in a drunken stupor he fell overboard, and to save him his crew threw a harpoon through his leg and yanked him back on board. His constant limp thereafter was a reminder of him how God could save such a wretch. He wrote:
Amazing Grace, How sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now I’m found,
Was blind, but now I see.
